Both diversity and integration
Ladies and gentlemen,
It’s my honor to share my ideas about culture development.
Cultural development seems like a huge problem that only anthropologists or government officials can handle. The two cultural developing status “diversity” and “integration” seems contradict to each other. However, I’ll say that culture is a river which moves in both diverged way and confluent way.
The riverbed of place can shape the river of culture. With the different geographical status, a river will have its branches and so do the river of culture. Since the river branches are exposed to various rocks and sands, the water differs a lot. A drop of water called music would tend to be fast in this branch while slow in another. Even Chinese poetry would be grandeur in the north while subtle in the south simultaneously. Ones living near a branch can hardly taste the invisible water of cultural phenomena only if they visit another riverbank can they tell the differences. Just as the water condition of an area will give the local some physical characters, the water of culture can also give us different psychological and spiritual characters respectively.
It’s not hard for us to figure out the culture diversity by places. Moreover the riverbed of time would also be a typical factor to form the river of culture. Along the flying time, a river may flow into a brook with instantly-changed width and depth. The rivulet of Chinese characters streamed from the original complex form into simplified characters. As we all know, a watershed might tear one river into 2 or more. The certain event can also serve as a watershed, be it the Enlightenment when different schools of thought coexisted. Sometimes a river pours down to meet other rivers which can be interpreted as an integration of culture. The increased dwellers of the riverbanks would be the fans of the new trend.
In order to maintain the river’s coursing in long term and in high quality, both of the ways are necessary and can’t be overused. If one branch runs in a dry place with little rain and severe sunlight, what’s worse, the dwellers don’t use it sustainably, this branch may be cutoff if nothing done. It’s common to see that some of the cultural heritage loses its successors. We need to have the endangered flow combined with others. We could see that the paper-cut or embroidery survived by some moderations of modern forms. However, the new river won’t be as pure as before. Once the purity of one culture can’t reach a certain level, its original fans will be reluctant to drink it because it’s too mix-up to be acceptable.
Shouldering the mission to maintain the flow of culture, we should adopt both cultural preservation and updating but neither too much division nor too much compounding. Thus the river of culture can moisten people’s drily land of spiritual world and clean the exhausted or increasing materialized hearts.

The rivers of culture
Ladies and gentlemen,
Today I’d like to introduce the rivers of culture to you. Citizens who live on the rivers are just anyone like you and me. Please allow me to be a tour guide in this sail cruise along the rivers, from the past till now and to the future.
The rivers of culture have many branches. At the origins of each cultural branch, we can notice the clear stream in high places with typical local taste. The branch of music ran purely with orchestral instruments and only the privilege in high position was able to drink the pure mountain spring of elegant concerts. The branch of poetry in the west startedwith only Latin so that the people near the riverbank who couldn’t read Latin would never enjoy it. Even in the upstream of Olympic Games, the ordinary had no chance to pay a glimpse to the splendid brook purling.
Upon the high mountain, the rivers of culture can remain its distinctions and differences. However a clear stream is avoided by fish. And only limited people benefited from it.
Fortunately, the streams run naturally to meet together in the mainstream.The distance of the two branches of culture between northern China and southern China is not as apparent as before. The Chinese painting can be well enough to reflect it. In ancient, artists rolling on the northern stream preferredfreehand brushwork while artists floating on the southern stream inclined Fine brushwork. In modern time, artists in China are drafting in the lake of
“north”“south” “west” and “east” style. How can we figure out where does an artist come from? Though rivers originated in different periods of time and different places, many of them paparallel acrothe world. The rivers of religion have their own system of dogma and deed however they all have a symbolized image with just different names. The wind of Allahswells the sails for Muslims. God blows a brisk wind to belly out the sail of Christian while Judaists handle their sail with the wind of El Shaddai.Yet they rafting and sailing in different rivers, their directions and core value always have some similar counterparts.
The rivers of culture run all their ways towards nowadays. They hide themselves everywhere. Let it be in a family, in a school and particularly in a company or a whole industry. The rivers flow in such a broad way is just shown of their flowing in our minds. In Steve Jobs’ minds, there was running an eastern metaphysics or dhyaha stream. His products are the inflow of his innovation when science meeting art and eastern philosophy.This trial has served for an engine to convert concepts since nearly every company in IT industry can’t wait to rush on to the ship in this new river integrated by science and art. This new river is a highlight for the art but also a challenge for science.
However, every river is pure in its upper reaches but unclean in its lower reaches.If the citizen do not use it properly such as building canals by force or even dump in the rivers, we can hardly preserve the purity of cultural rivers. People along the certain river will be harmed by the polluted river accordingly. Shouldering the mission to ensure the broad deep rivers rolling in solemn silence to the ocean, we are responsible to realize the fact that cultural diversity is the fact but integration is the overwhelming trend. Only act in time and in certain principle can we have the capabilities to guarantee the cultural development with sustainability. Thus the river of culture can moisten people’s drily land of spiritual world and clean the exhausted or increasing materialized hearts.

properly like by building canals blindly or even dumping in the rivers, we can hardly preserve the purity of cultural rivers. There are some waves of artificial or unnatural compound of different cultures like crodressing or mixing quirky food into a new dish regardlewhether it’s healthy or not. People along certain river will suffer from the potential harm and filthy polluted rivers accordingly.
Shouldering the mission to ensure the broad deep rivers rolling in solemn silence to the ocean of culture in the future, we are responsible to realize the principle that cultural diversity is the fact but integration is the overwhelming trend. Only by acting in time and with certain principle can we have these capabilities to guarantee the cultural development with sustainability. Thus the rivers of culture can moisten people’s drily land of spiritual world and clean the exhausted or increasingly materialized hearts.

University as I see it

When I was in the primary school, I thought university was a paradise without homework. When I was in the high school, I thought university was my future---decent job, good salary and high social status. But, when I really get into the university, I think university is place where I can be a better person.
First of all, university gives us the chance to learn a wide range of knowledge. All the courses including literature, poetry, philosophy, history and basic scientific principles are open to us. Besides, there are large droves of books in the library that we can get for free. How convenient! We can savor the pleasure of acquiring further knowledge by ourselves! It’s said that learning one knowledge means learning one aspect of our society, so when we’re exposed to all kinds of knowledge, we can know more about the society and discover the greatest fruition of ourselves.
Secondly, university stimulates our enthusiasm for learning many eternal issues. Taking my own experience for example, I did a lot of volunteer work in my first year.I still remember the smiling face of the old people
in gerocomium. I still remember the small gift a homelegirl slipped in my bag. I still remember the grateful looks of the three foreigners when I showed them around Hangzhou. All of these volunteering experiences illuminated a new trail for me. This trail leads to the true essence of happiness, that is, helping others, gaining self-esteem and feeling fulfilled.
Thirdly, university allows us to make mistakes time after time and witnesses our growth. This kind of feeling is like walking through the tunnel. We walk very slowly, because we can’t see any light. Some are afraid of falling on the ground, so they cease to walk, keep silent in the darkness. But others who never step back will see the sunrise in the end of the tunnel. University is like the tunnel, as long as we have the courage to make mistakes, we can be mature and strong.
That is the University as I see. It is the place where I can be a better me. It is the place where I can be what I want to be, not others want to see. But I know, there is no definition of the university that is agreed by all, or even most. I only want to tell all my dear friends, keep your head and live with no regrets.
