第一点，考生常常使用过于晦涩的单词，而又不理解其确切意思。很多考生在背单词的时候，认识到一些以前不了解的高端新托福写作词汇。但是这些高端词汇的用法常常十分的局限，只能用于某一特定的情况下。但是考生常常为了故意显示他的词汇量，宽泛和随意地使用高端词汇。这种做法反而会使得考官不能理解句意，感到莫名其妙。其实，一些简单有力的词汇在不同的短语中也是有不同的意思的。与其去寻找难词怪词，不如讲自己词汇量内的词语钻研透，灵活使用。
第二点，考生偏向于使用句式复杂的长句。英文写作中的长句常常可以体现文采和写作者对于语言的驾驭水平。对于托福写作考生而言，只要可以使用被动和主动之间的'切换即可，并不需要刻意地去将各种句式句型嵌套到文章中。文章本天成，妙手偶得之。生搬硬套从来就不可能得到阅卷人的赏识，还会耽误考生的时间，不利于文章思路的连贯。有效而精准地表达观点是最重要的，句型只是为之服务的工具，达到这个目的的手段而已。考生切勿本末倒置。
第三点，考生一味迷信于所谓的经典范文。中国的托福考生何其之多，一篇范文万人抄并非不可能出现。考生希望学习范文，托福写作辅导提到借鉴范文是可以理解的，但是在考场上刻意去回忆某一篇范文作为自己的答案是不可取的。一方面，范文也只是应试之作，不是什么值得铭记的文学佳作。
学不高明的老师是没有必要的，反而限制了自己的思路。另一方面，托福考官有丰富的阅卷经历。一旦让其发现抄袭的痕迹，或是让他感到千篇一律，分数自然不高。即使写作需要模板，也应当是考生平时通过练习自己总结的独一无二的模板。
